The climate across Scotland is changing and development and support of Consultant Physiotherapy roles are national strategic objectives that will lead to transformation of services across the NHS in Scotland.

There are many indicatives to support the work of Consultant Physiotherapists such as the Scotland implementation plan (2022-2027) of the UK AHP Public Health Strategic Framework (2019-2024), which clearly sets the ambition that in Scotland AHPs as leaders in public health. It is a plan of how AHPs can be supported and empowered to expand upon and develop further the leadership role in public health improvement that they already play.
Transforming Consultant Roles
NHS National Education for Scotland (NES) is leading on the new Transforming Roles (TR) Programme that aims to support Nurses, Midwives and Health Professionals (NMAHP) to develop and transform all AHPs to meet the current and future needs of Scotland’s health and care system. NES works in collaboration with key stakeholders to lead on education developments to support the TR programme agenda. These stakeholders include Health Boards / NHS Scotland Academy for Education / Regional Advanced Practice Academies / Universities and other specialist interest groups. The TR programme has an education and commissioning strategy based on local / regional service needs analyses with associated education configured to support service transformation, and practitioners are enabled to practice to the full extent of their capability.
NES NMAHP Post-registration Development Framework
In addition the NES NMAHP Post-registration Development Framework (2021) is designed to enable Consultants to use and builds on the strengths of the earlier version (NES 2010). The Framework supports the development of core knowledge, skills and behaviours in four pillars of practice for Consultants working at Levels 8 of the Career Framework for Health. It also enables profession specific and specialist knowledge, skills and behaviours to be added.
